Gemma Dryburgh motivated for more success after Solheim Cup experience

Gemma Dryburgh says she’s hungrier than ever to qualify for this year’s Solheim Cup team, after making her debut for the European team in 2023.

The world number 64 says the tournament in Andalusia was one of the best experiences of her life and one she won’t forget.

Dryburgh was a vital member of Team Europe on her debut in the competition delivering crucial points as the might of America were sent packing.

And now after her first taste of the event, she’s determined to make the team in 2024.

“I spoke to Catriona Matthew before the Solheim just to get a few tips and things and she said as soon as you get a taste of things, you won’t want to miss another,” Dryburgh said.

“She was exactly right. I don’t want to miss another one as long as I’m playing.

“It’s definitely a thing to work for, when it’s not such good weather outside or you’re not motivated to go practice.

“It’ll get you out your bed in the morning, that’s for sure.”

This year will be Dryburgh’s eighth year on the LPGA Tour in America with last season providing solid results including making every cut at all five majors, and a top ten finish at the Evian championship.

The Japan Open in 2022 remains her only tournament win so far but her eyes are fixed on another tour victory.

“Another win this year is definitely high on my goals,” she said. “Obviously winning at the end of 2022 proved to myself that I could do it on the tour and that I’m good enough as well.

“With winning you obviously need a bit of luck on your side as well when it happens. But there’s no reason why not.

“Another win this year would be one of my goals for sure.”

One weekend certainly circled in Dryburgh’s calendar is the Women’s Open taking place in August at the Old Course in St Andrews.

A regular visitor to the home of golf as a kid, Dryburgh admits a win there would top any other achievement.

“To win there would just be incredible,” she said. “I’m not sure what I would do.

“If that happened it would be a career best, no matter what happens, I think.

“It’s such a special place. I grew up going there with my family and a good week there would be amazing.

“It’s definitely a highlight of my year.”

Dryburgh gets her season under way at the tournaments of champions in Florida next weekend.
