Gerrard believes closed door games would be unfair to fans

Steven Gerrard has called for patience as football authorities work to deal with the coronavirus crisis – but says closed door games are not the answer.

The Rangers boss said that football was “secondary” with people concerned about the pandemic and that every club and every individual would feel the impact of the current situation.

All football in Scotland is currently on hold after the SFA and SPFL took the decision to stop games ahead of a Scottish Government ban on large events in order to slow the spread of the virus.

Leagues across the world have been shutdown with no end in sight, causing a problem with games still to be played to decide the outcome of competitions. That’s led some to suggest that fixtures could be played behind closed doors until titles and cups are decided.

Gerrard thinks that would be the wrong move and also believes that the risks and demands on players have to be uppermost in people’s minds.

“Players’ welfare is paramount right now,” he told Rangers TV. “We’re doing everything we can from a medical point of view to put all the right precautions in place.

“I’m in regular contact with the board to see what happens but I think we’ve got to try and trust the authorities to try and find the right solution.

“I’m not one who thinks we should be merging seasons and that type of stuff because I think it causes different types of problems for the players in playing such an amount of football in a short space of time.

“I think we’ve got to be patient. Football is secondary right now. What we have to do is just do everything we can at the training ground and at the club so the players don’t contract the virus because then it becomes a lot more complicated.

“I don’t have the answers. What I would say is that football is about supporters. The reason I joined Rangers was to coach in front of the wonderful support we’ve got. I know the players feel the same way.

“I don’t think the right thing to do is all of a sudden play all the games behind closed doors. I don’t think that’s fair at all.”

So we have to wait, we have to be patient and lets hope that a solution is found. But I don’t have the answers in that department.
