A champion boxer is in a critical condition after being found unresponsive and rushed to hospital on Saturday.

Willie Limond, a former Commonwealth lightweight champion, was taken to Monklands hospital in Airdrie after being found unresponsive in his car on Heatherbell Road, Coatbridge.

He remains in a critical condition, police confirmed.

Limond, from Glasgow, was set to face Joe Laws at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on May 3.

Laws paid tribute to his opponent, sharing that he was in his “prayers”.

He said: “Hope he makes a full recovery, as much as he had my life I secretly liked him.

“Life is mad, just goes to show you never know what’s around the corner. Willie my old son you was in my prayers last night and in them tonight. Everyone say a prayer for this warrior these next few days please.

“Of course fight is off, but will have next fight news V V soon, big love.”

Limond lost to Amir Khan in 2007 to hand over the Commonwealth belt – and in 2015 he fought and lost to Anthony Crolla in a duel for the vacant British lightweight belt.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Around 8.05am on Saturday, April 6, 2024, police were called to a report of a 45-year-old man found unresponsive within a car in Heatherbell Road, Coatbridge.

“The man was taken to Monklands Hospital where medical staff describe his condition as critical. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
