Ross: Glasgow City still disappointed to miss out on title objective

Glasgow City finished three points behind newly crowned champions Hibernian.

Leanne Ross insists Glasgow City are just as disappointed as Rangers in losing out on the SWPL title as the sides prepare to meet in the Women’s Scottish Cup final.

Rangers lost 1-0 to Hibernian at Ibrox on Sunday to hand the Edinburgh outfit their first title in 18 years and to add to their misery, City’s convincing 2-0 home win over Hearts took them above Jo Potter’s side and into second place with a Champions League spot as a reward.

Speaking at the national stadium, Ross was “unsure” if City, who last won the trophy in 2019, had a mental advantage over their opponents going into the showpiece at Hampden Park on Sunday, but admits her side fell just short of their pre-season aims.

The former Glasgow City midfielder said: “Obviously, we’re both very disappointed in terms of that objective of winning the league this season.

“It was a tight fight between all teams in the top half of the table. It was a difficult season.

“And obviously, neither of us have reached the objective of winning the title.

“So the next best thing for us was obviously that second place and guaranteed European football.

“So yes, we’ve come out on top there, but there’s still disappointment within our camp that we never achieved our overall objective of winning the league.”

While Potter told her players not to “sulk” in the wake of their disappointment at the weekend, Ross revealed a “real excitement” in Glasgow City’s training ground as the players battle for starting places at Hampden, which will host the final for the third successive season.

She said: “The players know there are jerseys to play for in terms of that starting line-up, so we’re trying to keep them calm and keep their feet on the ground so that the preparations are right.

“But there’s definitely an excitement about the place ahead of the game.”
