UCI World Cycling Championships: Day one of first ever 'mega event'

The championships will run for ten days until August 13.

The UCI World Cycling Championships is under way after Wednesday’s opening ceremony in Glasgow kicked-off the ten day event that will be held across the country.

The competitive action begins on Thursday with a bumper card from 9.30am.

It starts at the Chris Hoy velodrome with qualifiers for the Men Elite Team Pursuit, Women Elite Team Sprint, Men Elite Team Sprint, Women Elite Individual Pursuit, Women B 1km Time Trial, Women C5 500m Time Trial and the Men C5 7.5km Scratch Race.

The first medals will then be handed out at the velodrome, in the east-end of Glasgow, with finals in the Women C3 Individual Pursuit, Men C4 Individual Pursuit, Women C5 500m Time Trial, Men C1 Individual Pursuit, Women B 1km Time Trial, Women Elite Team Sprint, Men B Individual Pursuit, Women Elite Individual Pursuit and Men C2 Individual Pursuit.

The later session with medal events begin at 5pm.

Fort William will also be hosting events as the Mountain Bike Downhill Junior qualifiers takes place at the Nevis Range.

Scottish teenager Nina Yves Cameron will be representing the UK in the women’s qualifiers at 4.30pm.

The championships, which is said to be one of the biggest cycling events in history, will run until August 13.

One of the world’s biggest and most important cycling competitions, the events will see some of the world’s best cyclists compete across 13 contests in the ultimate tests of talent, tenacity and toughness.

Over 8,000 cyclists are set to participate in the contests at a variety of venues across the country.

The opening ceremony was held in George Square on Wednesday and included performances from artists and community based organisations including a set from multi-award-winning Scottish singer KT Tunstall.

Hosted by Scottish Commonwealth Games silver medallist Charline Jones and Glaswegian comedian Alan Anderson the event served as the official welcoming to the thousands of amateur and elite cyclists from more than 120 countries.
