Dundee United winger Glenn Middleton believes they have to aim high and see the new Scottish Cup campaign as an opportunity to claim some silverware.
Middleton speaks with experience having lifted the trophy with St Johnstone in 2021.
The former Rangers player was cup-tied for Saints’ successful League Cup campaign in the same season but started every game in their Scottish Cup run and scored in the semi-final win over St Mirren.
That run started at Dens Park, where United’s campaign kicks off against Dundee on Monday night.
And Middleton goes into the derby with the mindset that cup glory should be the target.
Middleton said: “You’d be daft not to, I think everyone backs themselves in a cup competition. It’s there for the taking.
“I have luckily done it in the past so I know how much it does mean and the excitement around it. It’s something you look back on and it would be great to move forward in the competition again.
“It’s a real exciting thing in Scottish football, a lot of people would love to be involved in it and you really see how much it means to supporters and clubs when you get to that stage.
“We have had our own targets in-house this season and they will remain in-house but you can’t fail but get excited when you come into a cup competition. Everyone would love to lift a trophy in their career and it doesn’t come around often. Monday will be an opportunity to take a step forward.”
