Gordon: It's a good achievement but Scotland players aren't satisfied

Craig Gordon says Scotland players have achieved something satisfying by reaching the World Cup play-offs but want more success.

Gordon saved a penalty and make key interventions as the national team beat Moldova 2-0 in their World Cup qualifier in Chisinau.

The result puts Scotland into the play-off semi-final in March and just two wins away from Qatar 2022. That task would be made easier if the team were seeded when the draw is made but that is likely to mean they need a positive result from Monday’s clash with group winners Denmark at Hampden.

Gordon says the players are looking ahead to that opportunity and want to keep momentum going after racking up a five-match winning run.

“It’s a good achievement but we’re not satisfied with just that,” he told STV. “We’ve got this game coming up and then we’ve got a play-off to look forward to.

“We’ll try and get a result, see if we can get ourselves seeded and then take it from there.”

The Hearts goalkeeper’s penalty stop after 80 minutes prevented a nervy finish after Nathan Patterson and Che Adams had opened up a 2-0 lead. Coming a year to the day after David Marshall’s penalty heroics against Serbia sealed a Euro 2020 place, Gordon thinks the date might be charmed.

“This must be the day for Scottish goalkeepers,” he said. “Maybe they can play more fixtures on this date for us. I’m delighted to make the saves to contribute to a winning performance in what has been a good campaign.

“We’ve got a good number of points, we’ve got one more game to go for some more and we’re looking forward to it.

“It was a great night. We knew we had a job to do to come and get the three points to secure second place.

“We’ve managed to do that with quite a convincing performance.”
