Hampden to be new home for Scotland women's team

Scotland Women are to play all their home internationals at Hampden to ‘inspire’ the game’s growth.

The move comes as the Scottish FA launched a new strategy – under the title “Accelerate Our Game” – in partnership with UEFA to try and build participation in the sport.

Previously the women’s national team have played fixtures across the country but all home matches in the upcoming World Cup qualification campaign will be played at Hampden.

A record crowd of 18,555 attended the last women’s fixture at the national stadium in 2019 as the players were given a World Cup send off.

Goalkeeper Lee Alexander says it’ll be a dream come true to play regularly at Hampden.

She said: “This is where you want to play. It’s the home of Scottish football. It’s a huge thing to say it’s our home venue. You want to play here as a kid. I remember coming here as 9-year-old watching the men’s team and all you want to do is get out there on the pitch.”

Fiona McIntyre, the Scottish FA’s head of women’s football, said: “It is huge. It is something I am really excited about and I know the players are really excited about it.

“They have had a fantastic experience here already when they played Jamaica and got that record crowd.

“Hampden is the home of Scottish football and so we are absolutely delighted about it and we can’t wait to start our qualification campaign here.

“The strategy is a huge milestone for girls’ and women’s football in Scotland, it is the first strategy for girls’ and women’s football specifically and it sets out the objectives or the next four or five years. It is really exciting.”
