Hearts player Cammy Devlin is leaving Qatar as one of the World Cup’s biggest winners despite not playing a single minute of football after he was handed Lionel Messi’s 1,000th match worn shirt.
The 24-year-old combative midfielder will now return to Tynecastle with the priceless memorabilia item worn by the Argentine superstar as he scored the opening goal in a 2-1 victory.
The dream shirt swap moment was caught on camera after the man of the match trophy was presented to the 35-year-old PSG forward who rolled back the years to put in a vintage top-class performance against the Socceroos.
The win books a mouth-watering quarterfinal clash with the Netherlands who beat USA earlier on Saturday.
Both sides have produced several memorable World Cup moments over the years including the 1978 final and the last eight clash in 1998.
Hearts shared the moment the pair swapped jerseys with a tongue in cheek comment saying: “He promised him his shirt, and he got it.
“Nice of Cammy to accept Messi’s shirt in return as well.”
Diego Maradona’s match worn Argentina shirt from the 1986 quarterfinal win over England recently sold for over £7m at an auction.
