Hearts players were involved in an on-pitch fight with their opponents before their mid-season friendly match was abandoned.

The first half of the game against Almeria was coming to an end when a brawl broke out and sparked chaotic scenes that ended with the game being called off.

Robbie Neilson’s men are in Spain preparing for the Premiership season’s return in two weeks’ time and they played the La Liga side on Sunday morning.

Alex Cochrane was shown a red card as was Almeria’s Rodrigo Ely with Hearts 1-0 down to the hosts as the first 45 minutes drew to a close.

Local media reports claim players and coaching staff from both sides were involved in trading punches during a “mass brawl”.

The players were taken off the field and the match abandoned with Hearts saying in a statement: “Following altercations between both sets of players, the decision has been made to abandon the match.”

Hearts return to league action with a home game against Kilmarnock on December 17.
