Hearts have launched a bid for defender Michael Steinwender as a replacement for Kye Rowles who is closing in on a move to the MLS.
The Austrian centre-back currently plays for Varnamo in Sweden and has made 20 appearances for the Allsvenskan club since signing from Hartberg in the summer.
Neil Critchley is hoping to bring the 24-year-old to Tynecastle this month to bolster his defensive options.
Hearts must agree a fee for the player who is valued highly by his club and negotiations are currently underway.
Reports in Sweden suggested Varnamo were looking for over £1m for the player who was bought for around £250,000 six months ago.
Meanwhile Rowles expected to complete his move to DC United in the next 24-48 hours.
The 26-year-old Australia international has made 26 appearances for the Edinburgh club this season.
Hearts are also actively pursuing attacking players as they explore a number of options to strengthen their frontline.
