Hibernian announce David Gray as new head coach on permanent basis

Hibernian have appointed David Gray as the club’s new head coach, with the former player signing a three-year contract.

Gray becomes the permanent successor to Nick Montgomery, having taking over as interim head coach following the Englishman’s sacking near the end of last season.

“It is a real privilege for me to become the head coach of this great football club,” Gray said.

“Everyone knows how much Hibs means to me. It is a massive club with a phenomenal fanbase, that I know very well – so to be given this opportunity is a true honour.

“From being here as a player and a coach for over ten years, I know what a successful Hibs team looks like and I am determined to succeed and take our club forward.”

Hibs sporting director Malky Mackay said: “Following a robust recruitment process, David emerged as our preferred candidate and we are delighted to have him on board.

“Having watched his progression closely over a number of years, David’s ready to step up and become Hibernian FC’s head coach.

“David understands the pressures and demands that comes with a club like Hibs, knows Scottish football inside out, is an excellent coach and a strong man manager.

“He already has good relationships with the current playing squad and members of staff both at HTC and Easter Road, which provides an element of stability, and we know he’s the right man for the job.

“Everyone is looking forward to continuing to work closely with David for the upcoming season and beyond.”

Gray made over 170 appearances for the Easter Road club in a seven-year spell after moving from Burton Albion in 2014.

A fan favourite, he wrote his name in the club’s history books with the stoppage-time winning goal in the 2016 Scottish Cup final against Rangers, ending the Leith side’s 114-year wait to lift the trophy.

After retiring from playing, he joined the coaching staff at the club and his spell as interim manager following Montgomery’s sacking was the fourth time he had stepped up to take over the first team, having done the same after the departures of Jack Ross, Shaun Maloney and Lee Johnson.

Gray will now be tasked with delivering a huge improvement on last season, when Hibs failed to reach the top six.

With Bournemouth owner Bill Foley investment group Black Knight Football Club having put £6m into the club, and an extensive review of the football department having taken place, expectations are high at Easter Road.
