Hibs have failed in their appeal to have Ryan Porteous’ red card overturned, with a panel ruling that the referee’s decision to send him off was correct.
Porteous was dismissed by match official Nick Walsh during his side’s Premiership match against Rangers on Sunday. The referee issued a straight red card for a lunging tackle on Joe Aribo.
The decision proved controversial, with some arguing that Porteous had not made contact with the player, and others believing the speed and power in the challenge made it reckless.
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard said that he believed the tackle could have ended Aribo’s season if Porteous had made contact.
Hibs defended their player and appealed the decision and a disciplinary tribunal convened on Wednesday to consider the case.
The panel ruled that Porteous was guilty of serious foul play and said that he will serve the original two-match ban.
The centre-half will miss the first two Hibs games after the international break when they face Dundee United at home on Saturday, October 16 and Aberdeen away on Saturday, October 23.
