Hibernian have defeated Hearts at Tynecastle in the Edinburgh Derby.

The capital’s green and white side now move five points ahead of their city rivals in the Premiership after the 2-1 win on Thursday afternoon.

It is only the second time in the last-16 games between the pair that the Easter Road club have tasted victory in the fixture.

Hibs opened the scoring early in the first-half when Kye Rowles headed into his own net from a corner on the ninth minute.

Hearts got themselves level at the end of the half and it was through another own-goal, this time it was Rocky Bushiri who turned the ball into his own net.

Dwight Gayle handed Hibs the lead again when he scored the winner with just over ten minutes remaining.

Craig Gordon was on top-form as he made a string of top saves just days short of his 42nd birthday.

The visitors had the best of the opening exchanges as they looked to take the game to Neil Critchley’s side.

They took the lead when Rowes, under pressure from Josh Campbell, headed past Craig Gordon to make it 1-0 to Hibs.

David Gray’s men also had good chances with Elie Youan and Chris Cadden both forcing saves from the Hearts keeper

Campbell had another effort as Hibs looked to take advantage of their period of dominance to double their lead but Gordon kept them out again.

On another day Hearts could easily have been three down by the break, but grabbed an equaliser against the run of play when a header from Shankland was turned past Jordan Smith by Bushiri in first-half injury-time to make it 1-1.

The home side came out of the traps strongest in the second-half as they started to take the game to Hibs.

Daniel Oyegoke and Shankland both had efforts blocked as they looked to put Hearts in front.

The Cadden brothers then linked up well up the other end when Nicky crossed the ball into the box for his twin Chris who had a header well saved by Gordon.

Hibs got themselves ahead again on the 78th minute.

Nicky Cadden was heavily involved again and he sent a brilliant cross into the box before Gayle glanced it past Gordon to make it 2-1.

Shankland had a chance to steal a draw late in injury-time, but Hibs managed to get it clear and hold out for a rare derby victory.

David Gray’s side now have four wins in their last five as the manager eases the early season pressure he found himself under.

Champions Celtic are the only team to beat Hibs in their last six league games as the Easter Road men jump up to seventh in the Premiership.
