The Honduras national football team will have to play their next home match without any fans in the stadium after supporters were banned for an incident that left Mexico manager Javier Aguirre with blood pouring down his face.
Aguirre was struck by a beer can thrown from the crowd during the first-leg of their CONCACAF quarter-final on Saturday.
Honduras won the game 2-0 with Celtic winger Luis Palma scoring a double at the Estadio Morazán in the country’s capital of San Pedro.
CONCACAF opened an investigation and has punished Honduras for “failing to implement adequate stadium security measures”.
The governing body also warned that “more severe sanctions” could be imposed if similar incidents occur at future matches.
Honduras boss Reinaldo Rueda said the incident had soured the 2-0 win and the Mexican football federation had said such behaviour has “no place” in football.
CONCACAF also added it was looking into “a separate disciplinary case investigating the conduct of Javier Aguirre” during the match.
Mexico fought back to win the tie and reach the semi-final with a 4-0 second-leg victory in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Honduras begin their World Cup qualifying campaign at home to Antigua and Barbuda next year with the game set to be played behind closed doors.
