New Zealand international James McGarry has left Aberdeen to join Brisbane Roar after his time at Pittodrie failed to go to plan.
The 27-year-old left-back joined the Dons on a three-year contract from Central Coast Mariners in 2023 but has been allowed to leave the recently-crowned Scottish Cup winners a year early to move back to Australia.
McGarry made just 14 starts and 28 appearances in total for the William Hill Premiership club before spending the second half of last season on loan with Greek side Athens Kallithea.
“A culmination of frustrating injuries and the form of Jack MacKenzie made life a little difficult for James, but I have never had any complaints about his attitude or professionalism,” manager Jimmy Thelin told the Aberdeen website.
“Sometimes things just don’t quite go the way everyone plans when a player makes a move and I think that is the case here.
“He has a lot of experience in the A-League and with a fresh start, I am sure he’ll do well there. He leaves with our thanks and best wishes for his future career.”
