Sweden international Jesper Karlsson has left Aberdeen after having his loan spell cut short by Bologna.

The Italian club have activated a recall clause in the winger’s contract and he is now set to be loaned out to Utrecht, who will have an option to buy him at the end of the season.

Former AZ Alkmaar attacker Karlsson – capped 14 times by Sweden – was a regular starter for the Dons and scored six goals after moving to Pittodrie in the summer.

“We were notified on Wednesday evening of Bologna’s decision to recall Jesper,” said Dons sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel.

“Jesper and I had a very good conversation. He was extremely thankful for his time in Aberdeen and we wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.

“From our perspective, given that this clause existed within the loan agreement, we have been scenario-planning for some time in the event it was activated.

“We remain committed to developing the players we have invested in, while also continuing to explore opportunities to strengthen the squad in areas where we believe improvement is still required.”

Karlsson told the Dons website: “I have really enjoyed my time here and in Scotland.

“Results didn’t always go as we had hoped, but Aberdeen is a great club with a fantastic fanbase and I would like to thank everyone for how I was treated.

“I would also like to wish the staff, my team-mates and the supporters all the very best for the future.”
