Josh Kerr wins gold in men's one-mile race at Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Josh Kerr has taken the gold in the return of the Commonwealth Games one-mile race.

The Scot surged to victory at Scotstoun Stadium on what has been dubbed Super Saturday.

It comes after Kerr shattered the world record for the distance in July at the London Diamond League meeting, with a time of 3.42.66.

He wasn’t able to best his world record, however, coming in at 3.54.12, ahead of Australia’s Cameron Myers and Kenyan Timothy Cheruiyot.

Fellow Scot Jake Wightman came in sixth place in the men’s race.

Prior to the race, Kerr said: “This is what it’s about, this is what a home championship is about, bringing your best stars out here and getting them to battle for the top spots.”

It has been a medal-winning Saturday for Team Scotland, with Neil Fachie winning his seventh Commonwealth Games gold in the tandem b sprint with Aaron Pope.

Melanie Woods also secured another gold in the women’s T54 400m, while Scott Cusack took bronze in the men’s judo 90kg.

Team Scotland’s medal haul now sits at 38, with 13 gold, eight silver and 17 bronze.
