Josh Taylor: I don't see a way that Jack Catterall beats me

Josh Taylor is convinced that he can handle Jack Catterall in Saturday’s world title fight in Glasgow, no matter what the Englishman throws at him in the ring.

Taylor is making his first defence as undisputed light welterweight world champion, with his four belts at stake when he goes toe to toe with Catterall at the Hydro on Saturday night.

Both fighters go into the ring with unbeaten records, and Taylor is adamant he’s heading for a 19th win from 19 fights, regardless of whether it’s a test of his boxing skills, toughness or desire.

“I don’t see a way that he can beat me,” the fighter told STV.

“Any way the fight goes I think I’m prepared for. I’ve prepared really well for Jack.

“If it comes down to a dogfight in the middle of the ring, and we’re slugging it out, I’ll win at that.

“If it comes to a boxing match, I’ll win at that.

“The only chance he’s got is catching me with a big shot if I make a mistake.”

The Scot has been respectful of Catterall’s ability and doesn’t read anything into the fact that Catterall’s opponents haven’t been from the elite level so far, but he remains confident he can reach heights that can be equalled.

“Jack’s not been in with any top level fighters but just because he hasn’t been in doesn’t mean he can’t do it,” Taylor said.

“We’ve all been there. I hadn’t been in with Viktor Postol or world-level fighters but I produced the goods.

“It can happen but I just don’t think there’s any beating me right now if I turn up on form.”

The stage is set for a thrilling contest at the Hydro and with a home crowd behind him, Taylor is determined to deliver.

“Everyone in Scotland has been starved of big events for the last couple of years and this feels like a big fight,” he said. “I’m the first person in Scotland to become undisputed champion in the four-belt era and the first person to defend them.

“It’s another history-making night and it’s going to be a successful one. I’m looking forward to it.”
