Jurgen Klopp hailed Mika Baur as an “insanely clever” player after making the Celtic midfielder the 1,000th man to represent Germany.
Baur came off the bench in the 77th minute of Germany’s 2-0 Nations League victory over Serbia in Munich.
The 22-year-old joined Celtic in August after helping Paderborn secure promotion to the Bundesliga and his rise has continued with his first international call-up and now cap.
Quoted on the German Football Association (DFB) website, Klopp said: “Baur is an amazing player. Insanely clever, with an unbelievable technical ability.”
Baur was delighted with his debut after overcoming his nerves.
“The team were unbelievable from the first minute to the very last,” he said.
“We put into practice the things that we discussed, like making life difficult with our gegenpressing paired with some players who like taking risks.
“The game was a highlight for everyone, not just for me because of my debut.
“I didn’t even realise at first that I was going to be brought on. I was surprised, my heart was thumping, but it was business as usual when I was on the pitch.”
