Kenny Murray is leaving his assistant coach role with Glasgow to take up a position developing Scotland’s best young players.
Murray has been appointed as head of player transition with the Scottish Rugby Union and will take charge of Scotland Under-20s.
The new role has been developed as part of a restructure overseen by the SRU’s director of performance rugby, Jim Mallinder.
Murray has been tasked with ensuring a consistent flow of players into professional rugby and the national teams.
The SRU added that Murray would be given the scope to ensure the style of rugby being played in the FOSROC Super6 club competition helps players and coaches move into the professional arena.
The former Cartha Queen’s Park and Ayr head coach, who joined Warriors in 2013, said: “Developing the best young talent in Scottish rugby is something I am incredibly passionate about and this role allows me to develop our existing performance environments and support our young players to achieve their full potential.”
Mallinder added: “To have someone who has been at the coal face of the modern professional game in Scotland join as head of player transition will ensure that our next generation of players are best prepared for what is needed, and know what to expect, in the current professional and international rugby environment.”
Murray will leave his role as Glasgow’s defensive coach following Saturday’s Heineken Champions Cup clash with La Rochelle, with Pete Murchie taking over.
