New Kilmarnock signing Kyle Lafferty has said he’s arrived at Rugby Park aiming to score the goals that steer the club to safety.
Former Rangers and Hearts striker Lafferty has become manager Tommy Wright’s first signing at Killie, penning a deal that runs until the end of the season.
Lafferty has been a free agent since leaving Reggina last month and says he’s keen to get back on the pitch and make the most of the remaining games.
He said: “I have been out of the game for a month now but I am obviously delighted, it is just round the corner from my home as well, that is important to be close to my family.
“I am excited to be back playing football. I have 10 games outside the (Scottish) Cup and it will be good to get back playing, hopefully scoring goals and hopefully get the team pushed up the league.”
Kilmarnock are currently in tenth place in the Premiership, one point ahead of Ross County in the play-off place and four points ahead of bottom side Hamilton. Lafferty believes the players are capable of a higher finish and can aim high.
“Training with the team today for the first time and seeing the players, I am puzzled as to why they are down in the bottom three,” he said.
“The squad that we have is definitely top-six. Hopefully, I can come in and add to the team and get the goals to push us up the league and if we can get into the top six we will be happy. That is the aim, to try and get closer to the top six.”
And if all goes well in Ayrshire then the well-travelled forward, who lives close to Rugby Park, won’t rule out an extended stay.
“Over the last couple of years it has been four months here, six months there,” he said. “If the club wants to offer me something at the end of the season then I’ll be happy to talk.
“It’ll be good if I’m here next season.
“Hopefully I’ll put in the performances that will get me a longer contract or someone else will give me a deal for a year or two.
“Hopefully I’ll be able to get something that allows me to concentrate on football rather than moving away or missing family.”
