Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes scored a stoppage-time winner to inflict defeat on Rangers in their Europa League clash at Old Trafford.
Cyriel Dessers had struck in the 88th minute to cancel out Jack Butland’s earlier own goal but Philippe Clement’s side couldn’t hold on for a point.
Despite the defeat, Rangers’ hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages remain alive with one match, against Union Saint-Gilloise at Ibrox, still to play.
Rangers were without a win away from home since early December and United’s recent troubles have been well-documented but both sides showed attacking intent from the start, though neither side could find a goal in the first half.
After the break, the hosts took the lead but in bizarre circumstances. Christian Eriksen’s corner was met by Rangers goalkeeper Butland but he punched the ball into his own net.
The visitors pushed to get level and Dessers was brought off the bench to add to their goal threat. He took his chance with just two minutes of regulation time remaining, shrugging off the attentions of Harry Maguire to take down a long ball before smashing an unstoppable shot into the back of the net.
Two minutes into injury time, United found a winner when a cross to the back post was met by captain Fernandes, who hit a first-time finish past Butland to ensure three valuable points.
