Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland has been called up to the Scotland squad for Tuesday’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Spain.

Shankland has been drafted in by head coach Steve Clarke after Che Adams was injured in the 3-0 win over Cyprus.

Adams was substituted during Saturday’s win at Hampden with a tight calf and Clarke had rated his chances of staying with the squad as slim. He now returns to Southampton.

The Scottish FA also announced that Celtic feull-back Anthony Ralston had returned to his club.

Shankland, who has four international caps and scored against San Marino in 2019, last played for Scotland in the 1-0 defeat to Slovakia in 2020.

The Hearts star has scored 21 goals for his club so far this season.

Scotland face Spain Tuesday night with both sides having opened their Euro 2024 Group A campaign with a 3-0 win.

John McGinn scored the opener and Scott McTominay netted a late double for Scotland over Cyprus at the national stadium as Clarke’s side got off to a winning start.

Dani Olmo put Spain in front after 13 minutes against Norway before substitute Joselu, making his debut at the age of 32, struck twice in the the space of a minute to wrap up a victory for Luis De La Fuente’s side.
