Lewis Ferguson is set to miss Euro 2024 with Scotland after suffering a knee injury that will require surgery.
The Bologna star had to be substituted off after 62 minutes of his side’s Serie A clash with Monza on Saturday after feeling a problem with his right knee.
Ferguson posted on social media on Sunday, saying “I hope the injury isn’t too serious: I’ll be back soon.”
An update from Bologna on Monday revealed that the 24-year-old will need surgery on a cruciate ligament injury. He looks to have played his last game this season with surgery of that nature usually needing three to six months of rehabilitation at least.
A club statement read: “Lewis Ferguson today underwent a medical examination which revealed that he has sustained an injury to his cruciate ligament.
“He will undergo an operation, after which his recovery time will be assessed.”
Ferguson has picked up 12 caps since making his debut against Denmark in 2021 and would have more were it not for midfield being the most competitive part of manager Steve Clarke’s squad.
He was a near-certainty to have been included in Clarke’s final Scotland squad for the tournament, where the national team face Germany, Hungary and Switzerland in the group stage.
The news comes as a huge blow to the former Hamilton and Aberdeen midfielder, who had been enjoying a season to remember in Italy. Ferguson has captained Bologna and his performances, which include six goals and four assists from 31 league games, have drawn rave reviews as the team.
He has been linked with a move away from Bologna this summer, with Juventus and Napoli reportedly interested in signing him.
