Kelly 'disappointed and angry' at defensive lapses in draw with Hibs

Rangers led 2-0 and then 3-2 but were unable to see the game out with a win.

Liam Kelly was left “disappointed and angry” after Rangers failed to beat Hibernian in the 3-3 draw at Easter Road.

The goalkeeper insists they should have won the game after scoring three goals but let themselves down with “sloppy” defending to let David Gray’s side back in it.

Hamza Igamane scored a hat-trick as Philippe Clement’s men led 2-0 and 3-2 before being denied full points by Rocky Bushiri’s equaliser.

The result now leaves them 13 points behind league leaders Celtic at the top of the Premiership despite Thursday’s Old Firm win at Ibrox.

Kelly replaced injured Jack Butland for both games as Rangers were brought back down to earth with a bump after the high of the 3-0 derby win.

Speaking after the game the former Motherwell captain said: “We are really annoyed that we don’t come away with the victory after scoring three goals.

“In any game when you play with this club, scoring three goals should be enough to win the game, so we are really annoyed at the defensive moments that we gave away.

“It was sloppy from us and we should never concede three goals.

“We gave away a terrible goal, an awful goal, all of us collectively, it was a poor goal and it gave them life in the game which they never had until then and it was out of nothing really.

“It was a set piece and we don’t defend it well as a team and that gave them hope after we were so good in the early stages of the game so it is really frustrating.

“It wasn’t good enough, we should have won the game.”

Despite showing signs of good attacking play, none more so than the man of the match performance by in-form Igamane, Kelly says that all counts for nothing if they can’t see out the win.

He said: “I thought we played well a lot but just didn’t defend well in moments, there was loads of good stuff but nobody cares when you don’t win the game.

“So I won’t waste anybody’s time by talking about the good stuff because nobody cares if you don’t get over the line with a victory.

“We need to look at stuff we didn’t do well and make sure we cut that out.

“I am just so disappointed and so angry that we never won that game, that is my overriding emotion.

“Obviously Thursday was amazing and the ultimate high, but this game showed why we are so far off it at the moment because in these defensive moments we haven’t been strong enough.”
