Eilish McColgan has won the Great South Run for the third time, breaking Paula Radcliffe’s 10 mile record and smashing her personal best for the distance.
The Scot won the event in Portsmouth with a time of 50:43, almost half a minute quicker than Radcliffe’s best. McColgan’s time was also 17 seconds faster than Sonia O’Sullivan’s course record.
The victory continues a successful year for the Scot on the roads after she won the Great Manchester Run last month and finished as runner-up in the Great North Run.
McColgan tweeted: “Wahhh! What a way to finish my season!
“Course record, British record & European record (we think!!) I could not have asked for a better way to end 2021. 10miles in 50.43.
“Thank you to everyone for the cheers around the course & for the support this season!”
The athlete’s mother, Liz Nuttall-McColgan won the event twice in the 1990s, and she tweeted her congratulations.
