McKenna hoping for favour from Spain when they play Norway on Sunday

Scotland defender Scott McKenna is hoping Spain can do them a massive favour by getting a result in Norway on Sunday.

A victory for the Spanish, or even a draw, in Oslo would secure Scotland’s place at next summer’s European Championships.

But a win for the home side would mean it would go down to the last two games with Steve Clarke’s side facing a trip to Georgia on November 16 before hosting Norway at Hampden three days later.

In that scenario, if Scotland would fail to win Tbilisi then it would come down to a final day winner-takes-all decider in Glasgow against Erling Haaland and co on November 19.

The Tartan Army would understandably rather avoid the tension and nerves involved in waiting for another month and the Scotland players will be the same with McKenna admitting they will be watching events unfold on Sunday with bated breath.

The Nottingham Forest player, who started in Thursday night’s 2-0 defeat to Spain, said: “We would have loved to do it for ourselves tonight, but I’m sure we’ll be watching the game on Sunday and if they can help us then hopefully that happens.

“There’s been a lot of hard work done in the first four or five games that we went unbeaten, so yeah tonight was a disappointment but we’ve still done plenty of good things in the group so far.”

Scotland fell to two late goals from Alvaro Morata and Oihan Sanchet in Seville after a second-half Scott McTominay strike was controversially ruled out with the game still at 0-0.

The national team currently sit top of Group A on 15 points, with two games left, Spain are in second place on 12 points but with three games remaining and Norway are in third on ten points with only the games against Spain and Scotland still to play.
