Scott McTominay won’t feature in Scotland’s World Cup qualifier against Moldova after suffering a throat infection.
The midfielder has been sent home from Scotland’s training camp in Spain, though he could return to the squad for Monday’s match against Denmark at Hampden if he makes a full recovery.
The absence of the Manchester united midfielder comes as a blow to manager Steve Clarke as he prepares for a match that’s of huge importance.
A win in Chisinau would guarantee Scotland second place in the qualifying group behind Denmark, and secure a place in the play-offs for the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
Scotland have won their last four qualifiers and are looking to continue that run against the side that’s bottom of Group F but will be without several key players.
Lyndon Dykes and Ryan Christie are both suspended for the clash, while Ryan Fraser and Grant Hanley have already been ruled out through imjury.
McTominay’s ability to play in midfield or defence has been utilised by Clarke to good effect but he will need for find other options for Friday’s match.
