Police in Seville made one arrest on Wednesday – an Eintracht Frankfurt supporter – amongst the approximately 160,000 fans in the city for the Europa League Final.
No arrests were made among the tens of thousands of Rangers supporters who made the trip to southern Spain for the match, which ended in a 5-4 penalty shootout win for the German side.
The Frankfurt fan was arrested on Wednesday evening for the assault of a police officer, authorities said.
Spain’s National Police had earlier released a statement regarding Eintracht Frankfurt fans assaulting Rangers supporters.
“The incident took place around midnight in front of Seville Cathedral and the troops of the Police Intervention Units had to intervene quickly to stop the Eintracht Frankfurt fans who were assaulting supporters of Glasgow Rangers,” the statement said.
Spanish TV on Thursday highlighted the efforts of a number of Rangers fans who helped out in cleaning up Seville following the match.
Rangers vice-chairman John Bennett praised the club’s fans for their conduct, saying they brought “colour and positivity” to the final.
Aaron Ramsey had his penalty kick saved by Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp before Rafael Santos Borré scored from the spot to secure the trophy, after the match finished 1-1 following extra time.
Around 100,000 Rangers fans are believed to have travelled to Spain for the match – the club’s first European final since appearing at the UEFA Cup final in Manchester in 2008.
Bennett admitted there was “hurt” at the final result but said that there had been plenty to enjoy from the occasion.
“It was a range of emotions,” he said. “It’s a very emotional moment when you lose any final, but that final in that manner…
“You couldn’t separate those teams and that’s separated us is that lottery. But the people I want to thank most, and there are so, so many people want to thank you throughout this club, throughout this journey, the ones I want to thank most are our fans.
“Our fans have come here and they have wowed people,” he said. “They’ve wowed people who have known the club, and wowed people who don’t know the club, perhaps more importantly.
“We’ve had feedback from the police, such feedback from the police, the local authorities of this city and at La Cartuja the stadium and they’ve all said the one thing: ‘Wow’. Overwhelmed and overwhelmingly positive by our fans’ atmosphere, our fans’ behaviour and this is for the fans.
“Everybody naturally thinks this oven of heat combined with your drinking and said beer and whatever, which football fans throughout the world do of course, and of course people look ‘Is that a cocktail for something that might go wrong?’
“Boy, oh boy. We brought, our fans brought a cocktail of colour, of noise, of positivity.”
