Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell sacked by Rangers with immediate effect

The Ibrox supremos have come under fire from supporters following a dismal start to their league campaign under former boss Russell Martin.

Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell have been sacked with immediate effect.

The Ibrox supremos had come under fire from supporters following a dismal start to their league campaign under former boss Russell Martin.

That followed Champions League elimination and defeats in the Europa League, on top of criticism from fans on summer transfer activity.

Both Thelwell and Stewart have been confronted by angry fans in person as they called for their sacking.

Protests have also been held inside and outside Ibrox in recent months.

The pair admitted upon the appointment of current boss Danny Rohl that mistakes had been made, but both insisted last month they hadn’t thought about quitting.

Thelwell, who was previously director of football at Everton, took up the post at Ibrox in April.

Stewart took over in November last year as chief executive officer, lasting one day short of a year in the job.

It is understood that a groundswell of fan anger towards the pair was one factor in the decision.

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh and vice chairman Paraag Marathe will be leading the search for their pair’s replacements, which is said to be under way.

Cavenagh said: “When we think about what we need from these roles, it’s different to who we think Patrick and Kevin are. We want people to align with our vision for the next chapter.

“I will not throw dirt on either of them; I think very highly of them both. The reality is the club needs different things today than it did six months ago.

“We’ve started the hiring process, and hope to have appointments soon, but we will prioritise quality and fit over speed.”

Fraser Thornton, director at the club, will now be acting CEO.
