Former Rangers and England star Paul Gascoigne is said to be “in the best possible place” after being admitted to hospital following a collapse at home.

The Sun reported that Gascoigne was admitted to an intensive care ward on Friday after he was found in a semi-conscious state, having apparently collapsed at his home in Poole, Dorset.

The 58-year-old’s driver and personal assistant Steve Foster told the newspaper: “Paul is in hospital, which is the best possible place for him to be right now.”

Gascoigne has reportedly been moved to an acute medical unit since, and is in a stable condition.

The former midfielder, who was one of Rangers’ greatest ever players and won 57 international caps as well as starring for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Middlesbrough and Everton, has had well-documented issues with mental health and alcohol addiction over the years.

Foster said that Gascoigne was grateful for the messages he had received since his collapse.

He told the Sun the former player would “like to thank everyone for the support he’s received so far from so many old friends who wish him well and want to see him back to his best.
