Pedro Martinez Losa watched Scotland brush Hungary aside in the second leg of their Euro 2025 play-off at Easter Road but warned that the team hasn’t achieved qualification yet.
Goals from Erin Cuthbert, Caroline Weir and Martha Thomas, as well as an own goal from Lauren Brzykcy, gave the Scots a 4-0 victory in the second leg, and a 5-0 aggregate win.
That sets up a two-legged play-off against Finland, with the winner taking a place at next year’s finals.
“It’s one step now,” Scotland boss Martinez Losa said. “We spoke a few days ago about how we had four games to get to the Euros. Now it’s two.
“They’re a competitive team, and we’ve played against them before. Now we have to be prepared.”
That previous meeting was at last year’s Pinatar Cup, when Finland won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Martinez Losa feels his side is progressing, but he says the mark of improvement will be when the team takes to the field in a finals competition again.
“The evidence will be when we are in a major tournament,” he said. “But our intention is to develop the team to make sure we go to a major tournament and compete at a decent level.
“At the moment, we are not in a tournament, but we will continue working to do that.”
After seeing the players celebrate on the Easter Road pitch at full-time, the head coach is certain they will enjoy the moment before returning to the hard work, and he says they will approach next month’s first leg match against Finland as a confident side with a focus on success.
“We are a very calm team now,” he said. “We stay focused on the task and prefer to focus on the things that affect the game rather than any other noise.
“Arriving to the camp with seven victories, six clean sheets and unbeaten from the campaign, it gives you confidence.
“But I think the biggest confidence doesn’t come from the stats, it comes from the group when we are in training and you see the players and their effort and how convincing they are.”
Goalscorer Martha Thomas said the players are desperate to finish the job and play at the level they believe they should be at.
“It would mean the world,” she said. “I think the last two campaigns have just been so disappointing you know, the last Euros and then the World Cup even more so.
“Not to go over the line to get us there, we’ve got such a talented team that we deserve to be at a major tournament. So I think a lot of us feel that and a lot of are the same squad from those two tournaments.
“So we’ve got a lot of fuel that we want to put into getting to the Euros.”
