Planes, trains and automobiles: Tartan Army prepare for Germany

The famous Tartan Army are on their way to next summer’s European Championships as they begin to plan their invasion of Germany.

Scotland will take on the hosts in Munich in the tournament’s opening game on June 14 before taking on Switzerland and Hungary in their other two group games.

The game against the Swiss will take place in Cologne on June 19 before the final Group A game against Hungary on June 23.

Tickets go on sale to members of the Scotland Supporters Club from noon on Wednesday.

But travel preparations are already well under way, with tens of thousands of Scotland fans expected to make the trip.

Supporters are having to think outside the box as they plan their adventure due to exorbitant air fares.

Since the draw on Saturday travel agents throughout the country have been inundated with fans hoping to find the best way to get to Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena for the big kick-off.

It feels like most of the country are plotting their way to Germany one way or another and STV Sport spoke to some fans in Glasgow who will be there.

One man said: “We’ll try to fly, but if we can’t fly directly there then it will be planes, trains and automobiles.”

Another stated: “I’m looking to do it a proper old school way, get a bunch of the guys together in a camper van.”

And another added: “See if you can’t get flights, then you just go through the Euro Tunnel, but I feel like it will all be worth it.

“It doesn’t matter how long it takes, we have waited for this experience for ages, and we’re finally going to get it.”

Tartan Army spokesman Alan Duncan said: “It will be the biggest en-masse accumulation of Scotland fans there has ever been.

“There will be a mass exodus of people wanting to be there, I just think it will be spectacular. If there’s a party happening then the Scotland fans will have to be there.”

Travel agent Linda Hill said: “What we are finding is a lot of people struggling to get flights, especially direct flights out of Scotland to the destinations.

“Germany is very close at hand, but the connectivity direct from Scotland is not great, so sadly we’ve been looking at Manchester, Liverpool, and the likes, but fingers crossed the airlines will come up with some more flights.

“That would be great.”

There’s just 191 days left until Munich, so if you don’t have your route planned already, then time is running out.
