Ange Postecoglou has backed his Celtic squad to keep improving and deliver even better performances than their convincing midweek victory over Rangers.

The Celtic boss, who has been name Manager of the Month for January, watched his side go top of the league with a 3-0 win over their city rivals in the east end of Glasgow on Wednesday night.

Reo Hatate marked his Old Firm debut with a double, his second and third goals since joining in the January transfer window, with another Postecoglou signing Liel Abada also getting on the score sheet.

But rather than resting on their laurels the Australian, who will have Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton back in the squad for Sunday’s trip to Motherwell, says they will be looking to get even better.

He said: “We go into every game, whether that’s Wednesday or on Sunday, and the main objective will be to play our best game of the season today and play better than we have done so far.

“We are not thinking about we did last game and thinking ‘we played well, we want to repeat that’. We are thinking we want to improve on it. It doesn’t always work like that but in terms of intent, of course we are looking to improve.”

Celtic Park was full on Wednesday night for the first time in an Old Firm game since 2019 and the 60,000 fans who packed into the stadium made the most of their night.

And Postecoglou says it was an experience he will remember for a long time.

He said: “The whole night was pretty special, from the moment we walked out you could just feel the energy in the stadium and how our supporters were really getting behind the team and then I think the performance of the boys was worthy of that support.

“I took my time acknowledging them after the game because I thought it was important we did that.

“It was a special night and something you want to store somewhere in your memory bank to recall in your old retiring years.”

Celtic have the chance to go four points ahead of Rangers at the top of the Premiership if they pick up all three points at Fir Park on Sunday.

Giovanni Van Bronckhorst’s men take on third placed Hearts at Ibrox later on that day.
