Dream come true? History could be made in Stuttgart for Scotland

With just hours to go before the crucial match kicks off, it is the stuff of dreams for the likes of Scott McTominay, John McGinn and Andy Robertson.

It’s nights like this that Andy Robertson, Scott McTominay, John McGinn and co dreamed of when growing up as kids.

After all the years of dedication, professionalism and commitment, they have the opportunity to create history. Do something that no other Scotland team has done before. Do themselves and their country proud.

From the outset, Steve Clarke has treated the tournament as a three-game approach. Knowing it was going to be difficult for his team to get anything from the opening match against the hosts, four points has been and remains the target.

After the misery of Munich, he wants it to be a special night in Stuttgart that will take the nation into the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time.

The loss of Kieran Tierney is another blow for the head coach. Another player added to the injured list.

Does Clarke change his shape by going four at the back or stick with three? He’s not a man who takes many risks and changing his team’s formation in the middle of the tournament in the highest of high stakes matches seems an unlikely move.

Hungary will come at Scotland. No question. They have to. Bottom of the group with no points, Marco Rossi’s side need a victory. Unlike Scotland, they won’t be able to possibly sneak through to the last 16 with a draw.

Not that Clarke’s team will be playing for a point. Speaking to fans here in Stuttgart, they are, as always, in a buoyant and confident mood. They have lit up the tournament with their humour, passion and singing. The Germans – like every other nation’s supporters – have taken to them.

But they don’t want this journey to end here. They believe their team can be history-makers. And so do I.

Scotland’s moment has arrived. It’s time for the players to deliver.
