Danny Rohl says he knew just how tough Rangers job would be

Defeat to Roma in the Europa League was a third loss in five games for the new head coach.

Danny Rohl insists the Rangers job is no tougher than he expected after his side were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Roma in the Europa League at Ibrox.

The 36-year-old head coach’s tenure began with a 3-0 defeat away to Brann last month and, although William Hill Premiership wins over Kilmarnock and Hibernian followed, the Light Blues were brought back to earth by a 3-1 Premier Sports Cup semi-final defeat to Celtic at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Rangers’ limitations were again laid bare against an accomplished Roma side as Matias Soule and Pellegrini had the visitors two up after 36 minutes.

The Serie A outfit ran out well-deserved winners to inflict a fourth straight Europa League defeat on Rangers and leave them bottom of the 36-team table.

Asked afterwards if the job was bigger than he first thought, former Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl, whose side face Dundee at Dens Park on Sunday, said: “No, no, of course not.

“I think when I arrived and looked to the schedule, then you see there are big games ahead.

“For me, and this was a big message after this game today, the focus is now on Sunday.

“Take three wins in a row in the league.

“And of course, in the future, we want to win such a game, such big games.

“But at the moment, we see where we are and we know where we want to go.”

The Rangers fans again directed their anger at chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell, whom they blame for the club’s struggles, and it added to the negativity around the ground, which has been present since before Rohl took over from Russell Martin last month.

However, the new Gers boss is convinced he can turn the whole club around.

He said: “I’m totally convinced that we do this in the next weeks and months.

“I’m fully convinced that we go in a direction.

“I see at the moment a team who’s willing to turn things around.

“I think, especially after the start of the season, the team had not so much confidence.

“And you see it, especially in these big games at the moment, but, this is my part, and I said this to the players. I’m totally convinced that we go in the right direction.

“But we have to work hard and we need on Sunday again a strong performance, we cannot do one step less, because then you will not get the results in this league as well.”
