Rangers coach Roy Makaay has been granted a leave of absence by the club due to a family health issue.

The Dutchman, who works as assistant to Giovanni van Bronckhorst, has been absent from the dugout in recent games and the club have confirmed that he has been given time off for personal reasons.

A Rangers spokesperson said: “Roy Makaay is dealing with a family health issue. We are all supporting him and hope to welcome him back soon.”

Coaches Dave Vos and Ceri Bowley will continue to assist Van Bronckhorst in the meantime, with the team facing Dundee United on Saturday before club football pauses for the international break.

Makaay joined Rangers in November of last year as part of Van Bronckhorst’s coaching team, having worked as part of his staff at Feyenoord.

The former striker was one of Europe’s most prolific goalscorers during his playing days and starred for Deportivo La Coruna, Bayern Munich and Feyenoord among others. He won 43 caps for the Dutch national team, scoring six times.
