Rangers are closing in on a deal for Nigeria international striker Cyriel Dessers.
The 28-year-old is currently with Cremonese, but STV understands the Ibrox club are close to reaching an agreement with the Serie A side and Dessers is set to become Rangers sixth signing of the summer.
Dessers is poised to become the latest recruit in what has been a busy transfer window at Ibrox as manager Michael Beale revamps his squad ahead of next season’s challenges.
Attacking midfielder Kieran Dowell, defender Dujon Sterling and goalkeeper Jack Butland all joined earlier in the window under freedom of contract.
With Alfredo Morelos leaving the club there was a need to add to the forward line and Sam Lammers has arrived from Atalanta for a fee in the region of £3.5m, with Abdallah Sima finalising a season-long loan from Brighton on Thursday.
Beale has identified Dessers as a player who can complement the existing squad. The striker began his career in Belgium with OH Leuven and Lokeren before a successful spell in the Netherlands where he enjoyed regular goalscoring with NAC Breda, Utrecht and Heracles.
Genk then signed the forward on a four-year deal in 2020 but he returned to Netherlands a year later for a spell at Feyenoord. Dessers scored 20 goals in 41 games but didn’t extend his stay there, instead moving to Cremonese last summer.
The forward found game time limited in the second half of the season with the Serie A club and finished up with seven goals from his 29 appearances last term.
Rangers begin their Premiership campaign against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on the weekend of August 5.
