Rangers crowned Premiership champions as Celtic draw at United

Rangers have won the SPFL Premiership title after Celtic dropped points at Tannadice with a 0-0 draw with Dundee United.

Steven Gerrard’s side put themselves in touching distance of the trophy with a 3-0 win over St Mirren on Saturday and the result in Dundee means they can’t be caught at the top of the table and win their 55^th top flight title.

Rangers are still unbeaten in the league this season and have taken 88 points from 32 games, winning all but four of their Premiership matches.

The Ibrox side have been runners-up in the past two seasons but have now stopped their city rivals from winning a record tenth consecutive title.

Celtic had the opportunity to make Rangers wait for confirmation of their triumph by winning at Tannadice but couldn’t find a way past Benjamin Siegrist in the United goal despite dominating possession and creating plenty of chances.

“After a superb campaign so far, Gers’ win over St Mirren yesterday put them on the verge of glory, with results elsewhere today meaning they can mathematically no longer be caught, with incredibly six matches still to play,” read a Rangers statement.

“It’s title number 55 for the club – the most of any football club in the world – and the first in 10 years following one of the most arduous decades in the club’s history.”

SPFL’s chief executive Neil Doncaster said: “I would like to warmly congratulate Rangers, their players, management team and directors on winning the SPFL Premiership.

“This has been a season like no other and Rangers deserve real praise for performing at such a consistently high level for so long. They are undoubtedly deserving champions.

“There are still a number of major issues to be settled this season, including European places, Top Six finishes and, of course, relegation. We are looking forward to an exciting run-in to the end of the season.”

Speaking after his side’s win on Saturday, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard spoke about the excitement of winning the title in his first job in management.

“I’m bubbling,” he said. “Bubbling. I’m obviously really, really happy and proud right now.

“I can certainly relate to these emotions that I’ve had as a player.

“At the same time I want to stay controlled and humble because obviously it’s not confirmed as of yet.

“But I think everyone knows it’s 99.99 per cent done.

“Because of what’s going on right now in the world it’s very difficult to get carried away and celebrate for real if you like, so I’m trying to keep a lid on things.”
