The SPFL has contacted Rangers over a pyrotechnic display during the Premiership match against Kilmarnock that is set to trigger a cut to future ticket allocations, STV understands.

Supporters let off multiple flares at Rugby Park at the beginning of the match on Saturday evening.

An 11-year-old boy required medical assistance after suffering a facial injury as a result, with Rangers stating that the incident showed “very real dangers posed by pyrotechnics”.

It’s understood that the SPFL have now made contact with the Ibrox club and view the display as being serious enough to breach the threshold for an existing suspended sanction.

The Glasgow club were hit with a suspended reduction of 50 away tickets after they breached SPFL rule H37, which relates to unacceptable conduct by supporters, in a match against Motherwell in August.

Rangers were also handed a €20,000 fine after “fireworks and smoke bombs” were used during their European clash against Club Brugge in August.

The league has tended not to take action where one or two individuals are involved but a widespread breach of the rules looks set to trigger formal action.

Motherwell, Aberdeen and Hibernian have also been contacted by the league over recent pyrotechnic incidents.

Rangers had earlier issued a statement on injury to the young fan, saying the club’s position on the use of flares was “clear”.

A Rangers spokesman said: “We are aware that one of our young supporters was treated by medical staff at Rugby Park on Saturday night, and we were concerned that he required assistance.

“Fortunately, a more serious injury was not sustained, though this incident underlines the very real dangers posed by pyrotechnics.

“We are in contact with his family, and we thank the staff who attended to him. We will continue to offer support in the coming days.

“The club’s position on pyrotechnics is clear. Their continued use is now resulting in sanctions from the football authorities in more than one competition, which inevitably affects the wider support.

“Our priority is keeping supporters safe, and we will continue working with fans to ensure this is the case at every match.”

Police Scotland has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.

A spokesperson said: “During the match at Rugby Park on Saturday, December 6, 2025, an 11-year-old boy was struck by a flare thrown from a section of the ground.

“He was treated for a facial injury by paramedics at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
