Rangers have been fined by UEFA and given a suspended ban on away supporters after pyrotechnics were lit in the crowd during a Champions League qualifier.

Supporters lit flares during the play-off match against Club Brugge in Belgium, which Rangers lost 6-0, on August 28.

That brought disciplinary action from governing body UEFA, who have fined the Ibrox club €20,000 (£17,300).

Rangers have also been banned from selling away tickets in any UEFA competition, including the Europa League, due to the incident.

However, the ban on selling tickets to away supporters is suspended and will only apply if there is another similar charge in the next two years.

A brief notice on UEFA’s website read: “The CEDB has decided: To fine Rangers FC €20,000 and to ban Rangers FC from selling tickets to its away supporters for the next one (1) UEFA competition match, for lighting of fireworks. Said ban from selling tickets to its away supporters is suspended during a probationary period of two (2) years, starting from the date of the present decision.”

The decision follows previous incidents in which Rangers were punished over the behaviour of their fans.

Last season’s European campaign saw fines levied after pyrotechnics were used in matches against Malmo and Lyon.

The club was also fined and handed a suspended stadium closure following a game against Fenerbahce, when a banner that read “Keep woke foreign ideologies out. Defend Europe.” was deemed to be “racist and/or discriminatory” by UEFA.

That incident prompted a message from the Ibrox club to supporters that told intolerant fans that “Rangers is not the club for you”.

The club said: “Rangers is a modern, progressive football club, and we are fiercely proud of our diverse playing squads, workforce and support. For the club to be charged with such a matter in 2025 is shameful, and the disdain for those responsible will be shared by the overwhelming majority of our supporters.”
