Rangers hit injury time equaliser to earn draw with Aberdeen

Rangers scored a late equaliser against Aberdeen to take a share of the points from a full throttled game at Pittodrie on Sunday afternoon.

Philippe Clement remains undefeated in all competitions as Rangers manager but the draw means he drops his first league points since replacing Michael Beale last month.

Bojan Miovski put the home side ahead early in the first half and they held on to their 1-0 lead until James Tavernier scored a stoppage time penalty to take a point.

It’s the third time from their last four league meetings that Rangers have failed to beat Aberdeen with the sides set to meet again in next month’s League Cup final.

It means the gap at the top of the Premiership remains at eight points with both of the top two dropping two points this weekend.

The game got off to a breathless start as it flowed from end to end with both goalkeepers being called in to action early on.

Ester Sokler had the best of the early chances when he was put through on goal, but Jack Butland done well to keep his effort out.

Kelle Roos was then called in to action soon after when he saved a Tom Lawrence effort.

But the deadlock was broken soon after when Miovski produced a fine finish into Butland’s bottom corner to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

The chances kept coming at both ends and Roos was again to thank for keeping the Dons in front when he denied Balogun from close range.

Barry Robson would have been the happier manager going in to the break with his side leading by a goal to nil.

With ten minutes gone in the second half Aberdeen broke away and found themselves in a three on two position just outside the Rangers box, but John Lundstram done well to get back and clear the danger.

Rangers then had two free-kicks from dangerous positions just outside the Aberdeen box in the space of two minutes with Tavernier hitting the ball with the first and Barisic winning a corner from the second.

The visitors then hit the bar twice in a couple of minutes as they continued to chase an equaliser, firstly through an effort from Lawrence from outside the box and then from a Balogun header after a Tavernier corner.

But just as it looked as though Aberdeen had done enoough to take all three points the referee was called over to the VAR monitor and awarded a spot kick.

Captain James Tavernier stepped up and made no mistake to make it 1-1 in injury time to salvage the draw that keeps them eight points behind league leaders Celtic, who also dropped points this weekend in a draw with Motherwell at home.

Sam Lammers had a late chance to win it but his header was easily saved by Roos.
