Rangers legend says talk of current team's 'fragility' is misplaced

Former Rangers captain Steven Davis has dismissed any talk of “fragility” in the current Ibrox side and insists they can still have a season to remember.

Sunday’s shock defeat at Ross County saw Rangers lose their advantage in the title race, finishing the weekend four points behind Celtic, albeit with a game in hand.

The nature of the defeat, where Rangers were a goal ahead at half-time but struggled against a side that is fighting at the other end of the table, has seen Philippe Clement’s side endure their share of criticism.

Davis, a key figure at Rangers over two spells at the club that totalled eight years, won ten trophies and reached two European finals in light blue but also endured his share of setbacks. He understands the questions but feels they aren’t justified for the current group when there’s so much to play for.

Having already won the League Cup, the Premiership title is still winnable and the team face Hearts in the last four of the Scottish Cup this weekend.

“I had a lot of disappointments as well,” said Davis, who was speaking at an event for cup broadcaster Premier Sports. “For me, we didn’t win enough trophies in my second spell at the club.

“I felt that we had the quality to do it and we fell short at times.

“Those questions are always going to be asked until you get that success that you want.

“It’s a little bit early to say about fragility and a bit easy to throw those accusations at the players and the club.

“They’re still in a strong position and could go on to have a really fantastic season.

“So let’s be the judge of that come the end of the season.”

Rangers’ season had been pretty much written off after Michael Beale’s dismissal but the arrival of Clement in October sparked life into the side. Having already fought back to be in a competitive position, Davis feels their resilience is evident.

“They’ve shown a lot of character to get themselves back into the title race from where they were at,” he said.

“Obviously, the last result was a disappointing one and the last couple of weeks could have been better in terms of the more recent results, but they are still very much in a good position and it’s still in their own hands, as such.”
