Cavenagh: Rangers haven't seen the best of 'great' summer signings yet

The Rangers chairman has already seen a net spend of £20m on the underperforming squad.

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh believes fans have yet to see the best of the club’s summer signings but says fresh investment in players could follow in January.

The Ibrox club brought in 12 new players following the American takeover in June, and had a net spend of £20m as the squad was reshaped.

Results and performances led to head coach Russell Martin being sacked after just four months in charge, and many believe the players brought in have been underwhelming despite the outlay on transfer fees and wages.

Cavenagh understands the questions over the squad but believes that they can show their worth under new head coach Daniel Rohl.

“I am [happy with the way the money has been spent],” the Ibrox chairman told STV. “I actually think we have yet to see the best from our squad.

“I don’t think our squad is complete. Didn’t believe it in August when the window closed, and don’t believe it now.

“But I think we’ve brought in a bunch of great players, and if they can play up to their potential, then we will see a much, much better performance.

“I think we started to see a little bit of that, both as a squad and as individual players in the first half on Saturday.

“So I am excited to see what Danny can unlock from this squad, and with the eye that if it isn’t where it needs to be, then we can continue to invest in it.”

Cavenagh, who gave his backing to under-fire chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell, believes the club needs “a little bit more steel and probably a little more experience”, while admitting it is also “a little bit heavy on loan players”.

He identified left-back as one position that could be strengthened, but said that he would have discussions with Thelwell and Rohl once the head coach has settled in to identify what support is needed to strengthen the side.
