Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh has revealed the reasons for sticking with Danny Rohl as boss, despite a “rough season” which ended trophyless and with some fans wanting rid of the German coach.

While Old Firm rivals Celtic were winning their fifth successive title with a 3-1 home win against Hearts, the Light Blues, consigned to third place, were beating Falkirk 5-2 in a dead rubber.

A section of supporters have turned against Rohl, who initially did well when he arrived in October to take over from Russell Martin, whose recruitment went spectacularly wrong, before four successive post-split defeats ended title hopes.

Cavenagh and the Gers board, though, have backed the former Sheffield Wednesday boss.

“It has been a rough season,” the chairman said at a media briefing at Ibrox.

“We’re incredibly disappointed with the results, as I’m sure you would expect, and responsibility for that is with no one other than ownership, the board, me and Paraag (Marath, part of the San Francisco 49ers Enterprise consortium which took over the club last summer).

“In a good organisation, a strong organisation, the blame goes up, not down. When we look at where we’re going from here, it’s crystal clear to us.

“At this club, success is winning titles. You don’t win a title, you haven’t succeeded. And it can’t be any simpler than that.

“And we will not stop until we have succeeded. As we look to next year, Danny is our coach.

“We believe that Danny gives us the best chance to win the league next year.

“We believe that there are two key elements that he needs to succeed and that would be a revamped squad, which is probably the most important, and a pre-season.

“He obviously came in mid-season. In terms of revamping the squad, we look at our squad and say we have a bunch of good players.

“We have a good squad and we’ve proven that in fits and spurts throughout the season.

“But we don’t yet have a good team. And that is our focus this summer, building a winning team.

“And so our focus will be less about sort of raw talent and more about things like chemistry and leadership and steel and footballing IQ, if that’s a phrase that translates.

“And so we are excited to make those adjustments to the squad.

“When we think about the club itself, we have talked about Rangers DNA, we have talked about people who will get their fingernails dirty.

“Again, success is winning titles. We didn’t succeed. We intend to succeed. And our job is to take the club forward and find that success.”

Asked specifically why he believed Rohl was the man to take Rangers forward, Cavenagh said: “We think Danny is a really good coach and we’ve seen that throughout the year.

“He’s not perfect. But when you think about what it takes to win, we think the most important change that we need to make is the squad.

“And with an improved squad, we think Danny will bring titles.”
