Rangers to play PSV or Sturm Graz in Champions League play-off if they defeat Servette SNS Group

Rangers have been drawn to face PSV Eindhoven or Sturm Graz in the Champions League play-off round if they get past Servette in their next qualifying tie.

The draw was made by UEFA in Switzerland on Monday and puts tough opposition between Rangers and the lucrative group stage of the competition.

Rangers faced PSV at the play-off stage of last season’s competition, winning a tense tie 3-2 to reach the group stages.

The Ibrox side were seeded for the draw and are in the League Path of the competition after finishing as runners-up in the Premiership last season.

Rangers, who began their league campaign with defeat at Kilmarnock on Saturday, face Servette at Ibrox in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie on Wednesday, with the return match in Geneva the following Tuesday.

If they come through that tie, they now know they will face a trip to Netherlands or Austria in the play-off. The first leg would be played at Ibrox, with the second leg in Eindhoven or Graz.

PSV are in the draw after coming second in last season’s Eredivisie, finishing seven points behind winners Feyenoord and six points ahead of third-placed Ajax.

Sturm Graz were second to Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian league. They haven’t reached the group stage of the Champions League since the 2000-01 season.

Rangers reached the elite stage of the competition last season, defeating Union Saint-Gilloise 3-2 on aggregate in the third qualifying round before playing PSV in the play-off.

After drawing 2-2 with the Dutch side at Ibrox in the first leg, an Antonio Colak goal in Eindhoven settled the tie and put Rangers into the elite stage.

The Govan side had an experience to forget after a tough draw pitted them against Liverpool, Napoli and Ajax. Rangers lost all six games and set a record for worst group stage performance, scoring just twice and conceding 22 goals.
