Scotland captain Andy Robertson believes the national team delivered one of their best performances to stun Serbia and reach Euro 2020.
After taking the lead in Belgrade in the play-off final, the team were rocked by a late, late Serbia equaliser that took the game to extra time. Penalties were needed to separate the teams and David Marshal saved the final Serbia penalty to seal victory.
Robertson said that bouncing back in a tough spot showed the strength of the team.
“It’s one of the best away performances I’ve been involved in as a Scotland player,” he said. “To do that on this stage, the toughest of games with the magnitude of it, and then we go and put in a performance like that.
“In the 89th minute one of us loses our man and we go to extra time, you think ‘Is it going to be another hard luck story?’. That’s the character that the boys have shown.”
Penalty shoot-out hero Marshall, who saved Aleksandar Mitrovic’s penalty to put Scotland through, said: “I had an idea from looking at previous penalties and Mitrovic missed his last one hitting it central, so I thought he would go left.
“We’ve had two penalty shoot-outs now and we’ve scored ten out of ten so the boys deserve the credit.
“Ten out of ten penalties in that pressure situation is unbelievable.”
