Ross County sack Malky Mackay with club second bottom of Premiership

Ross County have sacked Malky Mackay with the club sitting second bottom of the Premiership.

The Highland side have won just two of their opening 12 league games this season and are ahead of 12th placed Livingston only on goal-difference.

Mackay joined County in the summer of 2021 and lead the team to a top 6 finish and earned a manager of the year nomination in his first season.

In his second season Ross County finished 11th but were saved from relegation at end of season 2022/23 with a penalty shoot-out play-off win against Partick Thistle.

But, after a meeting this week with chairman Roy MacGregor and CEO Steven Ferguson, the club have decided that a change is now required.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the chairman said “Malky has brought so much more to the club and the wider staff than just football management.

“The board would like to put on record our thanks for his contribution over the last 2 and a half years and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career.”

The former Wigan, Watford and Cardiff City boss becomes the fourth Premiership manager to lose their job already this season with Rangers, Hibs and St Johnstone also all changing managers in the early stages of the campaign.

Ross County are without a win since their victory over Kilmarnock on September 2 and lost 1-0 to St Johnstone at the weekend in what turned out to be Mackay’s last game in charge.
