Ross Docherty is looking for Dundee United to put their Rangers disappointment behind them by ending the week in the League Cup semi-final draw.
The newly-promoted Tannadice side went into their home Premiership game against the Light Blues on Sunday on the back of an eight-game unbeaten run in all competitions and one point ahead of Philippe Clement’s men.
However, Jim Goodwin’s side never really recovered after Tom Lawrence gave the visitors the lead in the seventh minute, a goal which was ultimately enough to claim all three points.
United now begin preparing for the tie against Motherwell at Fir Park and Docherty, who came off the bench in the first half against Rangers, said: “It’s a huge game and a huge chance to get to a semi-final, which would be amazing.
“If we can get to the semi it would be an amazing start to the season, even with that Rangers defeat.
“We want to try and put the wrongs right, to try and improve and try to get through.
“We will look back on the game. We won’t say well done we almost got a result. It’s not like that. We need to be better in the final third.
“Overall, the start we have made, you have to be proud.
“We thought we could have taken more points earlier in the season but to remain unbeaten up to this Rangers game is credit to a team who has just come up.
“For us, it was definitely something we can analyse before we look forward to a big game on Friday night.”
The former Ayr United and Partick Thistle midfielder, who helped United up from the Championship last season, says the club have a “winning mentality”.
He said: “We built that last year. We knew it was win or bust to get this club back up.
“I thought we handled that pressure quite well despite some slight glitches throughout the season.
“Ultimately, we got to where we wanted to be. You can see the winning mentality there.
“We were disappointed to come off the pitch losing.
“You saw Rangers take the ball into the corner at the end.
“I am not saying there is anything against that but they are one of the biggest teams in the country.
“We need to take that positive. We want to try and get results against these teams.”
